DEEPER UNDERGROUND

After Maxx left the University of Washington, he texted Gabby to see when she might be ready to be picked up after work. She texted him back while he was driving and let him know she would be working late on “the project” and didn’t know when or if she would be getting home tonight. She had made arrangements with Miss Grey for a security escort when she was able to leave. The two DHS agents were going to hang out in the TechCom parking lot, so they’d be able to assist when she needed it.

He was feeling pretty beat after the adrenaline rush earlier and was looking forward to crashing at his apartment and watching some of the Mariners games that he recorded. He had plenty of beer in the refrigerator if he decided he needed a drink and was looking forward to a chance to unwind a bit after the whirlwind that had started Tuesday evening. It had been the craziest three days he’d had in several years, and things weren’t likely to calm down.

One of the lessons he’d learned in the military was to never pass up a chance to rest, eat, or pee. And he felt like this would be a good time to catch up on all three, since he was going to be a bachelor for the evening. Not to mention he would need to get up at 5 a.m. to pick up Glen then head back to Pioneer Square to meet Andres and Joseph at 6. He didn’t know what to expect going back into the Underground, but it would be stressful wondering if Haoyu was hiding behind every blind corner.

When Maxx got to the apartment, the first thing he did was order an extra-large pizza from Pizza Hut, grab a double of some Macallan twelve-year, and flop down on the couch. He started looking through the game he’d recorded from Thursday to watch while he recorded tonight’s game to watch later if he was still awake and Gabby wasn’t home.

While the game was playing on low volume, Maxx thought back over the events of the last few days. He jotted down some things that had stood out to him. He didn’t really get the entire alien connection. Joseph’s news had provided him some information that helped connect some dots if he let his imagination run wild. The possibility that some of the legends could connect to the Omega device strained credulity, too much like a science fiction movie to accept without some hard evidence. Surely DARPA had made this connection before and discarded it as irrelevant.

The other thing that was really bothering him was the relationship between the Chinese and Natalie. It felt like there was some connection he was overlooking beyond the obvious. There had to be reason she had been approached by the Chinese and then never followed through. It could be a series of coincidences, but Maxx didn’t believe in coincidences; there had to be a firm connection he hadn’t spotted yet.
